is my white pine too compromised to keep? #877244

Asked July 15, 2024, 9:33 AM EDT

Hi. I am looking for resources where I can investigate the health of a 150+ year old white pine that is next to my home out side of Park Rapids. This tree was hit by lightning about 5 years ago. It is damaged and the woodpeckers are working on it quite a bit. Otherwise, it still looks healthy save for the sap it leaves everywhere. My question is: is the tree healthy enough to leave “as is” or is it compromised where a wind event could snap it in half, possibly on my home. Thanks for your assistance.

Expert Response

Hi David,

This is a question a professional should answer. Look for a certified arborist to come to your property for a visit, or check to see if your county has a forester who would take a look at the tree.

You can find a certified arborist here:

Another option is to contact Hubbard County extension. They may have someone knowledgeable about trees who could visit.

Good luck.
