Magnolia scale #877239

Asked July 15, 2024, 9:09 AM EDT

I have a magnolia tree that has some sort of infection that appears to be "scale". Who can make that diagnosis and treat it?

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, but before I give

diagnosis and possible solutions are the infections

similar to these photos as you did not provide any.

Thank you.

They are similar to the second photo,  with the "fuzz" on the branches,  not the leaves.

Thanks,
Mike

Yes this appears to be Magnolia Scale which is

quite common this year. The links that I have listed

below will go into characteristics of the insect

causing the scale and treatment suggestions. As the

articles point out timing of treatments critical as to

when applications are done. This time of year

applications of a listed insecticide is the best

treatment with a follow up next March with a

horticultural oil spray. When using any treatments

READ and FOLLOW the label directions of the

product you use.

I have also listed your County OSUExtension

Service as you may wish to contact them for advice

also.
