how to care for Swiss cheese plant #877198

Asked July 14, 2024, 7:02 PM EDT

I am unfamiliar with this plant or how to care for it. It belongs to my son. The leaves seem healthy enough, but the stems "flop", i.e. don't stand up straight. Is this normal? I also notice what look to me like, roots ? (thin, tan colored shoots, several inches long) that are growing directly from the main green stems. My thought was that the plant needs a bigger pot. I am ready to do that, but am unsure on how to proceed. Should these stems be standing upright? If so, how will that happen?

Expert Response

Hi Margaret,

I confess that I am not an expert on this plant. I have one though. Here is a link ( it is not a research based source);

They are floppy. I just keep tying mine up a stake. Keep it out of direct light. I "shower" mine in the sink frequently in the winter to keep it more hydrated. That's pretty much all I can tell you.

Good luck,

To Sally Granath,

Thank you for your help.

I am attaching another photo. Please note the skinny brown shoots coming out from the sides of the stems. Is this normal? Are they new stems growing or are they roots?

Hi,

Yes, the brown shoots are normal.

Remember that it's really a vine of types, so it's sending out feelers to grip firmer structure.
