spraying for blackberry and other weeds in horse pasture #877185

Asked July 14, 2024, 5:46 PM EDT

I wanted to ask for your opinion on the best herbicide to use to spray my horse pasture. Im specifically going after blackberries but would like to cover other weeds as well. Also, I know that fall is typically the best time to spray but I have been mowing some of the areas and there are emerging blackberries currently. Would new growth be good to spray at anytime?

Hi Steve,
Late fall really is the best time to spray blackberry because the plants are drawing nutrients (and herbicides) down into their roots for winter. You could mow them again now. and allow them to regrow, and then spray in late October/November. An herbicide containing the ingredient triclopyr would be a good option to spray in your pasture. Crossbow is a mix of 2,4-D and triclopyr and would have some activity on other weeds as well. That said, many of our annual weeds (unlike perennial blackberry) are better controlled when sprayed in spring. It can be hard to kill everything in one fell swoop.

Check out the attached document for more detail options for controlling blackberry including some info on combining mowing with herbicide.
