Can hostas kill a maple tree #877158

I have a ring of verigated hosta around a maple tree and now the tree is dying.

Hello, Jayne, It's not likely that hostas would kill a maple, but maple trees are susceptible to many diseases and insect attacks. Please send pictures of the tree. Take the picture from where the trunk enters the ground to the top of the canopy and close-ups of the leaves and trunk. Thank you. Ask Extension.
