Seedling Trees Grow in Yard Transplant #877144

Asked July 14, 2024, 10:26 AM EDT

My yard is full of dozens, over 50, baby seedling oak trees that have grown in my yard. 1. Would MD Extension like to have any of them? 2. I try to offer them to area residents but they don't want to come dig them up themselves. Usually I do the digging/transplanting but I am not well this year to do so. 3. Can you recommend some Transplant Tips to help keep them alive when transplanting to container or in ground? Otherwise, I have to kill them with the lawnmower and that is highly upsetting to me. Nature loves to plant trees in the soil of my yard! Please Help!

Hi, Tess,
Please click on the link for our fact sheet on planting a tree or shrubIt may not apply to your situation, but it does state "Fall, winter (soil should not be frozen), and early spring are the best times to plant trees and shrubs." Most of the literature on
volunteer saplings supposes that the seedlings are being moved directly to another site to be planted in the soil, but some of the tips may be helpful to you as you pot up or move the seedlings. Here is still another link on "transplant a volunteer?"
Thank  you for your question.
