Expert Response
Dear Diane,
Thank you for contacting us about the webs in your shrubs. Inspect the webs closely to see if spiders or caterpillars are visible. Spiders are not usually a problem since they often prey on insects, but caterpillars or larvae may be. Check for any damage to the foliage. If there is none or little, you can probably just do nothing and they may turn into a lovely butterfly.
If you see caterpillars and they seem to be damaging your plants, try washing the webs off with a strong spray of water from a hose. Keep in mind that most insects are either beneficial or benign, and you don't want to get rid of them. If there is damage occurring, try to find the culprit and write back to me. I'll be happy to try to advise you on further steps.
