In my front yard I have a planting bed along a walkway under a large Japanese maple. I am looking for for small (under 3 feet tall) shrubs with flowers to line the walkway. Best would be colorful flowers. Any ideas? Thank you for your time and attention. Karen

Hi Karen and thanks for your question about shrubs to line a shady walkway. Luckily I just took a class that listed shrubs that would be good to plant in Oregon, so I'll pass along the list that qualifies for under 3 feet tall.
Oregon Grape... the smaller ones Bereris nerfosa or Berberis repens... these have beautiful yellow flowers in early spring and bright blue berries now
Bush Cinquefoil ... Diasphora fruiticosa blooms yellow and can be sheared if needed to keep it smaller
Any Azalea, just check the height of the plant on the tag and try to get one that is resistant to azalea lace bug
Salal... Gaultheria shallon This has pink flowers in the spring and edible blue berries in the fall.
Birch-leaved Spirea...Spiraea betulifolia var.lucida This has flat white flowers in summer and beautiful shiny leaves.
These are my favorite native plants (except the azaleas). If you would like non-natives, try your local nursery and tell them your parameters. They will have excellent suggestions.
