Large Panicle hydrangeas not blooming this year. #877122

Asked July 13, 2024, 8:33 PM EDT

I am a MG from McLeod County. A friend of mine has 3 hydrangeas that have bloomed each year. But this year not a single blossom on any? We did have a overabundance of rain from April-June this year. I have about 30 panicle hydrangeas and all by now have bloomed or are beginning to bloom so I can't figure out why hers are not. Could it be due to the rain? The hydrangeas look healthy. She did prune off the old blossoms in the spring. I can tell the plants have had a lot of growth where they were pruned. The hydrangeas are on the south side of her house and get some shade from a small false flowering crab tree.

Hi Roxanne,

I very much suspect that she nipped off the tiny new flower buds when she pruned off the old flowers. If she didn't , then deer possibly nibbled them ?

My guess is that she didn't notice the tiny new flower buds and removed them with the spent flowers.
