Bermuda Rye grass #877117

Asked July 13, 2024, 7:09 PM EDT

You mention that it is a weed because it spreads well and does well in especially warm heat. I have a South facing lawn with no trees and no neighbors on either side of my house, so it is constantly being baked in the sun from about 7am to about 8am in June/July and I struggle to maintain an HOA green color regardless of watering. Would this be a good grass for helping to combat that? I've read it requires less water than other grasses. Also, would this pair well with clover or mini clover?

Good afternoon!

I would not suggest using bermuda rye grass as a turf alternative. There are many turf alternatives out there! Do you have an irrigation system? Have you ever had it audited? That would be a great place to start before trying a new type of grass. Clover can be a good option but it still needs a high amount of water and dies completely back in the winter - meaning you would have some bare patches of soil.

Below are some resources on more drought tolerant turf alternatives!

Can you plant buffalo grass in late July to August? Online it was staying May or June

And can it be planted for large patches but not a full yard?

You can see later in the season but it is a warm season grass so some of the seeds may not make it through the winter if there is an early frost.

You can grow it in patches as well - it will spread as it spreads through rhizomes. Here is another article specifically on buffalograss lawns.
