Hi Miriam
Thank you for your gardening question. I cannot suggest a deer resistant tree. You will need to provide protection from rutting in the late summer/fall, and you may want to create a type of barrier to keep deer from eating as tree gets established and matures.
Regarding a shade tree under 20 ft, again please read the tag at the nursery regarding the trees as you are shopping and remember plants do not read tag so it might say 20 ft but it could grow a bit taller. Will 20 ft provide the shade you are looking for?
Here are some suggestions
Flowering Dogwood- Cornus kousa or Corns Florida
Redbud
Allegheny Serviceberry
Japanese Maple
Red Buckeye
I am also including some other information you might find helpful
