Xeriscape Hopeful #877060

Asked July 13, 2024, 9:53 AM EDT

I have xeriscape plans approved by GRIP - City of Aurora (reference attached). I also have a grant to cover removal of my front yard sod ~ 960’ sq. I’ve been waiting several months to finally get this scheduled and it’s supposed be done on July 23. I’m concerned that now might not be the best time to put in a xeriscape garden and that it’s much too hot to do any planting. I could re-schedule the sod removal for fall, but am unsure if the plants in my plans will be available at local garden centers. I do have the option to substitute plants as needed. Wondering if I should postpone to fall 2024 or just put everything on hold and wait until spring of 2025. Feeling fairly overwhelmed with all this and wonder if you might have any recommendations. Thanks!

Hello,

Thanks for reaching out to Ask Extension.

You are correct, the heat of summer is not the best time to be planting. While it does happen all the time, you do risk losing plants when planting in 90-100 degree heat like we have been having lately. Spring and fall months when the weather is cooler, are the ideal planting times.

You are also correct in that nurseries and garden centers will usually not have a great selection left come fall.

If you would still like to get your project done this year, you could buy your plants now while there is still a decent selection at the garden centers/nurseries and keep them watered well in their containers until the fall when you have your sod removed. Otherwise, waiting until spring next year might be your best bet.

I hope this helps,

Dawn
