The planting location sounds like it might be very sunny, is that correct? (Based on the sun-loving companion plants of Iris and Daylily that you mention.) Spicebush thrives in woodland conditions, where it gets at most around a half-day of sun, or dappled light. Soil should be moist (ideally) and well-drained, though in this weather plants may need occasional watering due to the ongoing drought. The overall paler yellow-green color of the foliage suggests that they are either exposed to too much direct sun or are perhaps a bit nutrient-deprived (most likely nitrogen), since the leaves should be a richer green color.

Hi Miri,
Thank you so so much, this is super helpful and I'm glad I haven't sprayed the fungicide yet. Sounds like we will increase watering since it's been so terribly hot and dry and perhaps look at transplanting them to a different spot depending how this year goes. Always appreciate your group's expertise!!!
