New Crab apple tree #877010

Asked July 12, 2024, 3:07 PM EDT

My 15 ft tree was installed last week. It has fungus now and is losing its leaves. Should I keep it or ask for something else? It is at my front door and is looking rough. Thanks much, dorie

Expert Response

What does the future of the tree look like? Will berries be normal in qty and quality? Asking for the birds. What happens in fall and next spring? From what I’ve read, there is little one can do, but what can I expect? Should a tree nursery sell these trees with fungus?

Would you keep it if it was your new focal tree in new yard?

Good Morning Dorie,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

You did not indicate who planted the tree. There are many issues to ensure a newly planted tree will survive. It is not a "one and done" issue.

Please click on the following link from the U of M Extension Yard and Garden website about planting new trees: https://extension.umn.edu/how/planting-and-transplanting-trees-and-shrubs

This information states:

  • Select trees and shrubs based on the soil, light, climate and residential conditions at the site.
  • There are different planting and transplanting methods for different types of tree stock.
  • Proper watering, mulching, fertilizing, pruning, staking and winter care will help keep your new and transplanted trees healthy.

How the tree thrives depends on how it was planted and how it is taken care of afterward.

As you scroll down, you can expand the information. One of the items states:

Water your new tree or shrub as follows, depending on rainfall amounts.

  • Water every day for 1 to 2 weeks after planting.
  • Water every 2 to 3 days for 12 weeks after planting.
  • After 12 weeks, water weekly until roots are established.
  • A steady 1-inch rain may replace one day of watering. Mulching the root area of your plant will also help hold in moisture. When in doubt, feel the soil around your plant.

With the hot weather we are having this week, your tree should be watered every day.

Please review the above website in detail based on how your tree was planted.

Good Luck!

I had our tree nursery install tree. They have done about 30 trees at old property, so they have a good track record with us. The tree came from one of his new suppliers.

Specifically, can you address my issue with apple scab on a newly installed tree? I can swap it out but don’t want to if it will be ok next year.  My  specific concerns, health of tree next year; crab apples for birds, leaves staying on tree until fall and overall tree health.

Dorie,

Are you sure the fungus is apple scab? Here is a link about apple scab: https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/apple-scab

It is your input and care that will help the tree to survive and thrive, if it has been planted correctly. No guarantees!

Good Luck!
