Is my geranium biokovo dead or just done for the season? #877007

Asked July 12, 2024, 2:59 PM EDT

Hello. Attached our vote photos of my geraniums, which had a lovely spring with flowers. Normally, this time of year, they are green without flowers yet I am noticing many brown stems. I am wondering if the heat and drought have killed my perennial geraniums or if the drought has simply caused the stems to wither.

Hello,

Thank you for your question. This has been a tough summer for many plants, with its long stretch of very hot, dry weather.

It looks like the geraniums are trying to come back; there appears to be lots of new leaves starting to grow. The soil looks moist which I assume is either from recent rain or from you watering the area. One thing to note is that geraniums prefer to dry out between waterings (where the 1st 2 inches of soil are dry) and will struggle in an area that stays wet. Perennial geraniums can produce blooms from spring to fall but need sun to do so and deadheading the old blooms encourages the plant to produce new leaves and blooms.

Has the tree grown and the canopy of leaves increased? It follows that you had lots of blooms during the spring when there was more sun before the tree's leaves were fully grown. If the level of shade has increased significantly, that may also be why the plant is not flourishing now.

You may want to give the geraniums some time and care before deciding they're dead.

Hope this information helps and I have some suggestions which I'll use to reply to your 2nd question.
