invasion of thistles in flower garden #876995

Asked July 12, 2024, 1:52 PM EDT

I had a beautiful flower garden. Last year I noticed thistles in the garden. They seemed to have come from no where. This year is a full invasion of thistles crowding out all my flower plants, many lilies, etc. How do I get rid of the thistles and restore my flowers,? The thistle and strange looking plants appeared after a tree had fallen next to the garden and the city came and took it away, digging down deep to remove it..

Expert Response

There are many different species of thistle in our area.  Without a photo or description, I can only guess you have Canada thistles.  You can only get rid of them by using chemicals.  Digging can leave a tiny bit of root in the ground which will regenerate into more plants.  Please open all in this link.  Control options are on the bottom of the page: https://extension.umn.edu/identify-invasive-species/canada-thistle
