What is wrong with this plant? #876971

Asked July 12, 2024, 12:36 PM EDT

This one plant has been showing evidence of Wilt. I thought he had too much water. The bed was pretty damp. But now I'm seeing evidence on other plants and dryer beds, not even the plants next door. I pulled it today. The Roots look fine and I didn't find any insects on it. I am cutting the branches off the other tomatoes that show evidence of the wilt and I'm sterilizing my clippers. What else can I do? Help!

Expert Response

Hi Sarah,

Those sound like good first steps. A few questions:

  • Are all the plants you describing tomato plants?
  • What type of irrigation do you use (e.g., hose, dripline, sprinkler)?
  • What is your watering schedule like (e.g., time of day and how often)?
  • Are the plants in close proximity to each other? Are they receiving enough air circulation?
  • Did the plants start showing symptoms when we were experiencing triple digit temperatures?
It would be helpful if you could please send in some more photos from a variety of distances so that we can see more of the affected plants and their leaves.

You are also welcome to stop by with your photos and/or some samples for better identification. Master Gardeners are available Mondays, Thursdays and most Fridays from 9:00am - 1:00pm. Samples can be dropped for diagnosis Monday - Friday from 8:00am - 4:00pm. The fee is $7/plant for Boulder County residents and takes 7-10 days for results.

Thank you for reaching out to the Boulder County Master Gardeners.
