Yes dog urine can hurt plants and lawns. Female urine is more damaging than male urine. If a dog, male or female, uses the same spot consistently you will see damage. You can dilute the urine by spraying it with water. There are also things you can put on lawns to counteract the urine.
A fence preventing the animal from getting close to the trees or plants or off the lawn will also help.
