How Much To Water Newly Planted Plants? #876939

Asked July 12, 2024, 9:34 AM EDT

Hello,

Thanks for being such a great resource for Colorado residents :)

I live in Erie, so along the front range.  I planted dwarf lead plant, panchito manzanita, and pawnee buttes sand cherry plants within the last week.  With all this heat, I've been watering them every day but I'm concerned I might be overwatering.  How much should I be watering these newly planted plants?  They are relatively small, from #1 and #2 sized containers.

Thanks again for your help,

Mike

Expert Response

Thank you for choosing plant materials that will adapt to our arid, high-desert climate here on the Front Range.

If only plants could talk...we’d know exactly what they need.
But plants cannot talk in a way I can understand them, Mr. Bennett, so this bulletin I am sending you will give you lots of research-based information from Colorado State University Extension about how, when and why to water:

You did not send photos, but I am wondering if you are seeing leaf scorch. Here’s information about that topic for you: https://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/yard-garden/leaf-scorch-2-911/

Don’t forget about winter-watering: https://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/yard-garden/fall-and-winter-watering-7-211/

If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact CSU Extension again.

Stay cool!
