Please identify bugs #876925

Asked July 12, 2024, 8:23 AM EDT

Attached is a picture of Bugs with wings. Some of them were smaller and did not have wings. There are a very large quantity near our home and on our deck. We usually see them in very early morning and shop vac them up. This is a very recent thing and we have not seen them on our property in the past. They are all over slider door screens and windows as well. Please identify what they are and what we should do about them. Thank you.

Are the wings hairy? They are definitely a type of fly and could be
drain flies. If you want to discover if these are coming via the inside of your home, cover the drain opening during a down time with a clear plastic container that has one or more glue boards taped to the sides. Leave in place overnight or for a few days to catch flies.

If outside, this drain fly or similar species usually breed in standing water. There aren't great options to manage them due to our wet summer climate. You can continue cleaning off the affected areas with wet rags or a shop vac to remove the flies. Unless you can eliminate standing water, it's not practical to try other methods of control.
