Asked July 11, 2024, 9:15 PM EDT

HI, i just stumbled across this site and have read some of the Q/A.  Thank you so much for making this available to viewers like me.  This is great !  I am on the South Shore of MA and noticed there are no groups available, but hoping you may be able to provide some advice.  I am in a 6b Zone and was wondering if you had any advice on how to get rid of clover ?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Carmen,

Thank you for reaching out to the UNH Extension Infoline. I am happy that you found our group and that the other resources have been helpful so far!

White clover can definitely be a challenge to get rid of in lawns as it is often mixed with various turfgrass and spreads rapidly. I will be including a few sources for your reference below, including UMass!

https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/faq/how-do-i-control-white-clover-my-lawn
https://extension.psu.edu/lawn-and-turfgrass-weeds-white-clover
"This weed is best controlled by herbicides containing dicamba, clopyralid, fluroxypyr, and quinclorac. Products containing combinations of these active ingredients usually provide very good control of white clover." In these articles, it is recommended to wait until fall to apply herbicides. Please ALWAYS read the label instructions for proper application rate, timing and frequency.

I would also recommend submitting a soil sample to understand your current soil composition. This will be helpful to determine if your lawn needs any other nutrients to really thrive!

Here is the link for the UNH Soil Testing Services homepage, which has the address to send the sample to, as well as information on best practices for submitting a soil sample and other resources: UNH Soil Testing Services

And here is the link to the submission form specific to home yards and garden: UNH_soil submission form_Home Grounds and Garden

Please reach out if you have any further questions. I hope that you have a great rest of your day!
