White Pine browning needles #876854

Hello out there Ruth, Mr. Johnson again ( 014440) I did get back the results of my soil test yesterday.. But this White pine just started this like over the week end.. What’s up with this, dying needles on the ends?.. How crazy I’m used to the branch of the tree losing needles but the end? It happened so fast no sign of any type bugs also have two more trees close with no sign yet .. Hate to lose this tree .. Had in the ground since 2018 growing so well Help

The new growth flagging in this specific way looks like a pest that is on the rise in the Great Lakes region White Pine Bast Scale. This pest, along with the pathogen Caliciopsis pinea (a fungus commonly called Caliciopsis Canker or pine canker) are both problems for white pines in our area. In combination, this pest/pathogen complex can kill weakened or stressed trees.

No treatments are advised but trying to keep your tree as healthy as possible is generally advisable to reduce pest damage. Minimize drought stress with proper watering. Make sure the tree is planted in enough sunlight and gets enough airflow (not crowded out by other trees).
