Chipmunk problem #876832

Asked July 11, 2024, 1:29 PM EDT

My friend that lives in VA said a chipmunk got into her air conditioner , chewed a wire that killed it and ruined the air conditioner. She is asking for help in ways to deal with Chipmunk control. She also says something is destroying her garden. She has a buried soaker hose that is being chewed in half in multiple places. She lives in a wooded area with a pond just down the hill from her back door. She is over run with Canada Verse that completely destroy the small patch of grass she has gust outside the back porch. She also has multiple holes at the bank of the pond destroying hat whole area. Would you have any advice for her?

Expert Response

Hello, Deborah! Thank you for contacting us.

It would be best for your friend to contact the Master Gardener group in her county in Virginia. They will be better positioned to answer her questions. Here is a link to the Virginia Cooperative Extension Master Gardener page. It has a link to “Get Gardening Help”. Clicking on it will lead to a page where she can find her local extension office. I will leave you with some research-based information about controlling chipmunks. I can say, from personal experience, it is not easy! We tried a variety of methods before hiring a professional to trap them. Even with that we still see the annoying little critters occasionally. Here are some sites that might be of help:

Controlling Nuisance Chipmunks – U of Missouri Extension https://extension.missouri.edu/publications/g9527

Chipmunk Control – U of Georgia Extension https://extension.uga.edu/publications/detail.html?number=C910&title=chipmunk-control

Nuisance Wildlife – The Ohio State University Extension https://extension.osu.edu/today/nuisance-wildlife

I am sorry, but I cannot even hazard a guess at what might be chewing through her soaker hose and I do not know what Canada verse is. I cannot find a reference to it online.

Wishing your friend in Virginia the best of luck. I hope her local Extension office can help her solve her lawn and garden issues.
