Purple coneflower damage #876829

Asked July 11, 2024, 1:20 PM EDT

There is some disease on my purple coneflower. It is a straight native species. Can you tell me is it is asters yellow or mites? Some flower heads are ok. Others are severely deformed or pure stunted green. Thanks!

Expert Response

Hi Jason,

I suspect mites, but the links on the page below will help you differentiate. Sometimes a single plant can have aster yellows and mites.

Aster yellows cannot be cured and infected plants should be dug up, bagged and put in the garbage. If you suspect mites, cutting off the flower heads, bagging them and putting them in the garbage can sometimes stop mites from spreading and prevent reinfection the next year.

Good luck.
