Asked July 10, 2024, 2:22 PM EDT

I have these trees in my yard that are getting a dar growth around where the sprouts are coming out of the branch. when these appear the needles start loosing their color. Can you tell me what this is and how to treat it? Is it something i should worry about my other trees?

Hi Samantha,
I'm glad you reached out.
This is "sudden needle drop" of spruce. It may be caused by a fungus that grows at the base of the twigs that you very effectively captured in the pictures you submitted (thank you!!).

Other factors like heat or improper planting may also contribute to the disease.

The publication below outlines management options, which should occur in the spring, when the new growth is elongating.

Thank you,
