Drip irrigation placement? #876647

Asked July 10, 2024, 11:35 AM EDT

1. How far from by row of garden string beans should I place a drip line with drip emitters about 12 inches apart? 2.For a row of old large wide boxwoods, the distance from the trunks for the drip placement?

There's no set distance, but roughly the center of the root zone (on that side of the plant at least) should suffice. You may have to probe the soil a bit to see where that may be, as root spread can vary depending on soil type, obstacles like stones, and how well-watered they've been in the past. As a guess, without seeing your growing situation, perhaps 6 to 8 inches away from the main stems of the beans would be a good distance for the emitters.

Boxwood roots are relatively shallow compared to most other shrubs, though will still spread out width-wise quite far if unobstructed; definitely further than the branch spread if they are unhindered. The emitters can probably go at least a foot from the crown (the main growth point where branches emerge from the roots), but if the shrubs are wide, even two feet is probably fine, or along the drip line (the edge of the widest part of the plant's canopy).
