Cutting lower limbs on KWANZAN CHERRY TREE #876595

Asked July 09, 2024, 10:43 PM EDT

How do I know if I can safely cut several of the lowest limbs on my Kwanzan Cherry Tree?

New Castle County Delaware

Expert Response

It should not be a problem to get several lower limbs of a Kwanzan cherry tree. You can remove up to about 1/3 of the limbs of any tree without harming the tree. Be sure to follow the three cut method (see publication) to avoid ripping bark and cut outside the branch collar to avoid damaging trunk tissue so the tree quickly seals the wound with callus.
