What kind of tree is this? Are the berries edible? I see deer eating them frequently.

Macomb County Michigan

Expert Response

Hi Sara, This appears to be a mulberry tree, but I'm puzzled by the image of the berries lying on the ground. Mulberries look a lot like blackberries (bumpy), but your picture shows berries that look smooth...more like blue berries. Perhaps the berries were beginning to decay when you took the picture? Can you please confirm what the berries actually look like? Thanks!

Yes, the berries on the ground were beginning to decay. They're definitely bumpy.
