What kind of squash is this? And how will I tell when it's mature enough to eat?

Howard County Maryland

Expert Response

Winter squash are ready to harvest when the rind is hardened and it's difficult to indent it with a fingernail.

The light-colored squash in the background resembles a striped cushaw and the squash in the foreground could be a buttercup or kabocha type. Are they growing on the same plant? Is this a volunteer plant?
