Maple Trees in Distress #876579

Asked July 09, 2024, 8:05 PM EDT

We noticed the leaves on the tips of our maple trees (multiple affected) are turning colors and dying. A couple entire branches have died! I have attached three photos of one of the trees at varying distances. Please help us save our trees!

Hello Kristi,

Maple trees suffer from a number of diseases and insect attacks. These include anthracnose, powdery mildew, bacterial leaf spot, scale insects, and borers to name a few. Maples also may suffer from nutrient deficiencies in the soil. Read more about these problems here: https://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheet/maple-diseases-insect-pests/

One of your trees appears to have powdery mildew. Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that affects many trees, shrubs and plants in the landscape. Generally, it does not cause significant damage to the health of the tree. Read more here: https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/powdery-mildew-trees-and-shrubs

MSU Extension’s Plant and Pest Diagnostic Lab can properly diagnose the problems with your trees. To learn how to submit a picture/sample, go to: https://www.canr.msu.edu/pestid/

A certified arborist can assess your trees. To find an arborist in your area, go to: www.treesaregood.org, the website of the International Society of Arboriculture.
