Pruning in the heat? #876526

Asked July 09, 2024, 3:09 PM EDT

Good afternoon. I'm hoping for a little guidance on pruning. We use a landscaping company that comes a few times a year for big gardening tasks around our house: mulching in the spring, bed maintenance later in the spring, etc. I just got informed that they were coming this week to prune. My question is: is it advisable to prune in this heat? It strikes me that it might cause more stress on our already incredible-heat-stressed shrubs. On the other hand, maybe it would help the shrubs retain energy and water with shorter limbs. I know pruning basics but this one I'm not sure of. Any guidance on whether a heat dome prune is a good or bad idea?

Hi,

We would generally not advise to prune in high heat in the middle of the summer beyond any broken or dying branches.

It also depends on the plants and if it is the right time of year due to blooming etc. Most plants don't need to be pruned beyond perhaps some general shaping; if you are pruning to maintain a certain size, this can stress the plants and overtime cause health issues.

As a general rule of thumb though it would not be great to prune in high heat and if they need to, then early morning when it isn't so hot would be best.
