Ants on Roses, 2nd try #876509

Asked July 09, 2024, 1:00 PM EDT

I can’t send the video on your system. Black ants, reminiscent of ants commonly seen on peonies, are eating thru the center calyx section of rose buds on certain roses. 39 yrs of rose growing & never seen this. 3 of my 45 roses affected. Temps have been normal here, as well as rainfall. Let me know how I can send the video which shows the ant in question. No any activity the last 2 days. MI rose experts asked that o contact MSU.

Expert Response

This would be unusual for ants to be the primary cause of this damage. They typically feed on nectar, seeds rather than cause direct chewing injury. It's possible that the ants are a secondary issue taking advantage of the weakened rose, from feeding by another chewing insect such as the Asiatic Garden beetle (feeds at night) or Japanese beetle.

A pyrethroid could be sprayed to protect the rose from insects but it may be toxic to bees. Acelepryn is another compound that protects against beetle damage and is less toxic to bees.

Feel free to send the video to my by email (<personal data hidden>).
