Perennials for cold zones #876502

Asked July 09, 2024, 12:25 PM EDT

Hello! I do not live in Minnesota but am writing a magazine story on garden perennials for cold zones, such as Minnesota and other northern states. I would like to know what grows well in zones 2-4 (if you have a list, that is great) and if there are tips you might have to help gardeners in those regions. Thank you.

Expert Response

Good Morning Jennifer,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

I will refer you to the U of M Extension Yard and Garden website: https://extension.umn.edu/find-plants/flowers#bulbs-2391512

This discusses plants that grow in MN.

If you peruse any nursery website, they will tell you what zones each plant will grow in. Most plants sold at a nursery will have a tag that will also state what zone the plants will grow in.

Plants that thrive in Minnesota may not thrive in Maine or Washington state.

Good Luck!
