Brown patches in Lawn Plus Pink Cotton-like Mass #876483

Asked July 09, 2024, 11:16 AM EDT

We have patches of brown grass (still rooted) dispersed in our mostly bluegrass lawn, both the front and back sides (but not the entire lawn area). I will pull a core and check my thatch level in the coming days. This morning, I noticed a pink cotton-like mass on the tips of the browned grass. I have not seen this before. The cotton-like mass was not observed in the "healthy" grass regions of the lawn. I have attached three photos for a visual understanding of the problem. I welcome any feedback you are able to provide. Thank you!

This looks like it is a fungus called pink patch.  It occurs when there is an over abundance of rain in late spring and early summer.  It’s similar to snow mold.

It will correct itself over time.  You can apply a fungicide, but it’s really not necessary.  Once the weather dries up, it should go away.  You may have to rough up and reseed the area in the fall.

The weather has been really crazy and is causing all types of issues.

You can google pink patch and read more.  Try to select a site the looks reputable- not something like Reddit.  I found info in a Pennsylvania extension article.
