oak tree problems #876474

Asked July 09, 2024, 10:38 AM EDT

Why are the acorns (very small) dropping in July? Also the tree has a lot of of sap dripping on everything. The 50 year old tree is in the front yard between two driveways. A lot of rain water drains between the two houses every time it rains.

Howard County Maryland

Expert Response

Can you provide some photos? The acorns are probably a stress response possibly from potentially drought stress, or if the sap is dripping it could be that the tree has some type of insect feeding on it. If you see any insects or boring holes in the trunk you can send photos of that.

Even though it is in between houses where the downspouts drain, we have had drought conditions for most of last summer through central Maryland, and now again this summer with the high heat. Supplementing water in times of drought would be beneficial.

You can attach photos to this response.
