Moonglow Juniper Issue #876455

Asked July 09, 2024, 8:38 AM EDT

Hello! I'm looking for help with my Moonglow Junipers. Pictures are enclosed. These junipers are planted in close proximity to a Bradford Pear, and wild pear trees are nearby as well. I'm fairly sure they get apple cedar rust, or cedar hawthorn rust, as evidenced by the galls in the one picture. The orange spore tentacles from these galls were very evident a few springs ago. Whether the issue is that rust, or if a combination of factors exist, I'm looking for advice to give these junipers some help. Or are they simply too far gone? Thanks in advance!

Expert Response

This juniper looks to infected with Phomopsis tip blight and black knot.  Cedar apple rust only infects between apples/crabapples and junipers - not pears of any kind and the galls are orange on the junipers.  Also cedar hawthorn rust is only between hawthorns and junipers.  Please see this website for further information - https://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheet/juniper-diseases-insect-pests/

You can prune out the dead areas (be sure to prune all the blight), but this will disfigure the tree and no new branches will grow from the bare trunk.
