Is our Coral Bark Maple healthy? #876424

Asked July 08, 2024, 7:48 PM EDT

On October 30, 2023 our 2.5” caliper Coral Bark maple, (Sango Kaku) was planted by Big Trees Today of Oregon, Inc. Hillsboro Oregon. We have followed the proscribed water regimen using a tree irrigation watering bag. The tree has developed early fall coloring but has not dropped any leaves. Should we be careful about this?

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Lori.  Premature leaf color change is often caused by environmental stress, heat, depletion of soil nutrients and over/under watering.  Your plant appears to be in full sun, which is not recommended.  Rather, this species should be in light shad to guard against this exact situation.  You might want to get a soil test for pH and soil nutrients.  Here is the closest lab:  https://al-labs-west.com/

Good luck!
