Beetle? #876421

Asked July 08, 2024, 7:16 PM EDT

Finding this beetle and others on my plants . Are they ALL Japanese beetles?? They especially devour my lily’s in clusters. But have also seen them on astilbe. Daisies, enchinea, roses. What is the best solution? I’ve tried diatomaceous earth power and captain jack dead bug.

Hello Dawn:

Thank you for the great photos.

These are the oriental beetle. https://content.ces.ncsu.edu/oriental-beetle

The plant pathologist suggests that you could try pyganic to control.

HI again, thanks for your diagnosios.  I have ordered the pyranic concentrate.  due here tomorrow.  Will the pollinators be affected by this spray?  Can it be sprayed all over the plants?  The beetles are on my plants everyday whether I spray Captain Jack dead bug on them or not.  A far as the devouring of my lilys....not sure what has eaten some of  them.  also seen

a red beetle.  I believe its called a lily \beetle.  So frustrating....  :(        Thanks again,  Dawn

Hello Dawn:

Thank you for being conscious of how the use of the pyganic affects our pollinators.

The following was provided by our State Coordinator:

The article provided says, "It is not a good idea to spray flowers to protect them from oriental beetles, Japanese beetles, or any other chewing pests as pollinators and butterflies are bound to suffer from the pesticide residue. Suspending a light bulb over a pan of soapy water each evening helps catch many oriental beetles as they fly about. Place the pan on the ground with the light bulb a few inches above it."

She could handpick if she doesn't want to impact pollinators.

Regarding the Red Lily Beetle, here is a resource for you - https://extension.umaine.edu/publications/2450e/    Follow the recommended non-chemical control methods to protect our pollinators.
