Thrips infestation? #876391

Asked July 08, 2024, 5:03 PM EDT

Hi,

I have a feverfew plant that I let continue growing when I saw it show up in my raised vegetable garden bed at the beginning of the season.  A week or so ago I cut a bunch of the flowers and brought them indoors to put in a vase.  Then I started noticing dozens of these tiny bugs, so I brought the bunch back outside to avoid the bugs lingering in the house.  I took a snap of one of them on my counter (first image).

A week or so went by and I investigated some of my other plants and found some more evidence on my veggies' leaves (second image) and a few of these bugs on the edge of the garden (third image).  I did some googling and I think these are thrips.

Can you confirm these look to be thrips?  If they are, what methods can I use to get rid of them?  If they are not thrips, what are they?

Likely unrelated, but I also recently tested my soil (at home, not a lab) for alkalinity and it appears to be highly alkaline (8.5++).  This would not be related I assume.  My soil is made up of a lot of added compost over the past 2-3 years, some coconut coir, perlite, and azomite with native soil below.

William,

Unfortunately I can only view your first photo. The other 2 are heic format, which I cannot view.

It is possible that the circled spot in your first photo is a thrip, but it is too small for me to be sure. If the other photos show more detail and you can resend in jpg format, that would be great. If they do not show more detail, it would probably be best for you to catch some in a jar and bring them to the Extension Office at 9595 Nelson Rd, Longmont.

In the meantime, here is a detailed CSU article on thrips: Thrips - Agricultural Biology (colostate.edu)

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.  I'm uploading a few more images in JPEG format.

I'll follow this post with a few more that show some of the damage I'm seeing.

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Bill,

Thank you for sending in additional photos. From the photo you sent it does look possible that you are dealing with thrips. To be sure, we recommend that you bring some into the Extension Office (9595 Nelson Rd, Longmont) for accurate identification. The fee for this service is $7.

Once identification is made, we can more effectively assist with management alternatives.
