Conifer rust #876376

Asked July 08, 2024, 4:02 PM EDT

I have 3 conifer trees in large pots. I believe they are cedar varieties. There's new growth on the end of the branches but a lot of orange rusty dead spots in the middle of the branches and on the trunks. They are about 5 feet tall.

Thank you for writing, Kristi.  Do you have a question?  If you need help, we need clear, close up photos of the spots you are describing, as well as one of an entire tree, so we can identify the species.  Thank you!

Thank you for the photos.  I am unable to from them whether your plant has a fungus (https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-disease/cedar-incense-broom-rust) or whether it is in too small a container, and unable to absorb enough water.

I suggest that you send plant samples to the OSU Plant Clinic:    https://bpp.oregonstate.edu/how-submit-plant-materials

Good luck!
