Herbicide for grass only #876346

Asked July 08, 2024, 2:05 PM EDT

Hello, I am trying to establish native plants near a pond. There is a lot of Velvet Grass infesting the area. Too much and inaccessible to pull. Is there a type of herbicide that I can use? Thank you, Richard Hyams

Expert Response

Thank you for your question and concern. Velvet grass which
was introduced as a source of forage source and as your know
can become a problem where not wanted. Control and
elimination is possible but near aquatic areas removal
becomes more challenging.

You did not mention how close to the water area you will be
treating so I'll try to give a general assessment of what is
available. While the following herbicides ingredients and
formulations will give you results their use at or near bodies of
water requires extreme caution as herbicides act much
differently when released in aquatic situations. Products
containing Glysophate, Fluridone, Triclopyr, Imazapyr, or 2,4-D
will work in elimination of your grasses, their use near water
areas require caution to prevent drift or run-off! Agriculture
Vinegar products are also effective. If you should go with using
a herbicide weather synthetic or organic ”Always Read and
Follow the Label Directions.” Also be sure it is Labeled safe for
aquatic use as I do not know how close your application will
be.
You may want to consider mechanical means such as
mowing, trimming, or burning of the area. Keep in mind that
Velvet Grass spreads by seeds so removal procedures are most
efficient prior to flowering! Also keep in mind that this is
usually not a one time procedure and may need repetitive
applications.
I realize I may not have answered you problem completely
but as I said above plant removal in or near water areas is
more complicated. I have listed a few links that may better
help you but I might suggest yu contact your county Extension
Service and/or Conservation District. I have listed their contact
information below as well.

Your welcome. Another product you may look into are products containing Flumioxazine.

I would suggest you contact you extension Ag Agent or Agronomist before using any

herbicides for your purpose. Best of luck.
