Summer Squash blossom end rot #876341

Asked July 08, 2024, 1:45 PM EDT

My summer squash fruits seem to be developing well until they are 3-4 inches long and then they start to rot at the blossom end. I'm putting straw under the plants to keep fruit off the soil. Doesn't seem to be the usual blossom end rot -- any ideas?

Hi Don,
Thanks for contacting Ask Extension with your question about blossom end damage on your squash.   Since you sound like you are familiar with blossom end rot, we will move on to other possibilities.
Poor pollination: Fruits may begin to develop without pollination, but must be pollinated to continue normal growth. The unpollinated fruit remain small and may show a rot beginning at the blossom end. Try hand pollinating and see if that helps.
I also recommend you have your soil tested to rule out pH or nutrient issues.
Happy Gardening!
