Consort black currant white pine blister rust #876339

Asked July 08, 2024, 1:41 PM EDT

I am interested in planting a Consort variety of black currant. I do have a white pine in the yard and there are some in the surrounding area. I have read conflicting information regarding resistance of the consort blackcurrant to white pine blister rust. Is it advisable or not to plant a consort black current in this situation?

Hi Jill,

I think I would not plant that ;

Try one of these;

Thank you.

I wan’t to check as per the first link below states: "In areas where the disease is not prevalent, it is still best to avoid planting black currents in locations where white pines are growing unless rust-immune cultivars (like ‘Consort’) are used”.

To me this sounds as though the Consort is rust-immune.

Jill,

My apologies, I stand corrected. I love blackcurrants and I don't know why they aren't more popular, they are practically pest free !

Plant away.
