Insect infestation on Plum leaf #876338

Asked July 08, 2024, 1:39 PM EDT

My 10 year old Greengage Plum is covered with frass on the top side of leaves and the bottom sides are covered with young non-flying crawling insects and a few adult winged insects, pale green color. Ladybug beetles are numerous on the top sides of the leaves. I understand this is not particularly harmful to the tree but I'd like to know what the insect is.

Hi Don,

That's quite a picture you have.  They are aphids.  I found some microscopic pictures of them and they look just the same.  A hard, forceful watering will get rid of most of them.  They are prolific this year.

I sprayed my rose bush with water and the number of aphids turned the house wall gray there were so many.  You can also use insecticidal soap without damaging the plant.

I am attaching the video with the microscopic images for your review.  If you have further questions, please contact us again.

Thanks Sheryl -- and I thought I knew aphids.  Great video.  Don
