Asked July 08, 2024, 10:24 AM EDT

This Maple tree had leaves in the spring but lost all the leaves after a frost. New leaves never came back and now the trunk is loosing bark. I have enclosed a picture. Your opinion will be appreciated. Thank you

Thankyou for using Ask a Master Gardener.  Unfortunately, there is a lot of information required to get an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan for as stately of a tree this one is.  I would recommend calling a local arborist.  An arborist can not only diagnose but can also treat if needed. Yo can find a certified arborist at this web address:

More than likely, the frost really stressed your tree and the tree could not fight any underlying diseases.  Now theses diseases are rearing their ugly head.
Good luck with the arborist if you choose to use one.  They are wonderful to work with!
