Bean stunting #876271

Asked July 08, 2024, 8:16 AM EDT

I am an avid gardener and I have spoken to several other local gardeners and we all have an issue with our beans this season. The plants are stunted with dead or dying leaf tissue around the leaf margins . Some varieties are more affected than others but they all have the same issue. Any ideas about what is happening?

Thank you for your question. The first photo with yellowing leaves resembles a nutrient deficiency or other abiotic cause. Have you had a soil test and made sure that you are meeting your plant's fertility requirements?

The second photo where leaves are greener but there is still necrosis, sometimes not just as the leaf margin, is a little more questionable. You can send in samples to the diagnostic lab on campus to test for presence of a bacterial or fungal disease: https://www.canr.msu.edu/pestid/submit-samples/. If your neighbors are experiencing similar issues at different sites, that could suggest presence of some pathogen that has been spread around.
