Massive infestation of sprintails in home #876261

Asked July 08, 2024, 2:00 AM EDT

We are experiencing a massive infestation of springtails in the house. They're coming in through drains, under doors, through closed windows, It is overwhelming. They cover the floor, sink, walls, window frames - even my bed, which is VERY disconcerting! We get an infestation every year from field irrigation next to us, but this year is overwhelming. I know they search for moisture and eat mold and debris. I have used Ortho Home Defense insect spray, but it only kills the insects it actually contacts, and has no lasting effect. I am concerned about our exposure to insecticides in the house. We are careful not to get too much water next to or near the house, but we do have a vegetable and flower garden. It is overwhelming this year, and my house is close to uninhabitable. Please help! I may have to move until this seasons infestation is over.

Expert Response

Hi,
Sorry to hear you are having such a bad springtail invasion.
I don't have direct experience trying to control such a springtail invasion but found a University of California IPM webpage that had some management recommendations.
Here is the link so you can see what they recommend...

In particular, you could consider having a pest control operator spray the foundation of your house outdoors to provide a barrier so the springtails do not enter. I use a similar service to prevent household ant invasions at my house.
Best wishes!
