Hello Suzanne,
Thanks for reaching out to the EMG Helpline to ask about these red beetles. They appear to be lily leaf beetles (LLBs).
LLBs overwinter as adults in sheltered places, soil, and plant debris in gardens and wooded areas. They can lay hundreds of eggs each season. For smaller amounts of LLBs, you can hand pick adults and larvae or knock them into a container of soapy water. This reference includes a close up photo of their eggs as well as larvae camouflaged with feces:
This fact sheet from UMass contains a lot of helpful information about this bug, including control options for large quantities of beetles: https://ag.umass.edu/landscape/fact-sheets/lily-leaf-beetle. If you do decide to apply an insecticide, always remember to follow the product label.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.
