Planting under rhodies #876230

Asked July 07, 2024, 7:55 PM EDT

I have plants in pots under my rhodie but would like to put the plants in the ground. In the past anything i put in the ground dies. If i build a 12inch tall raised bed will that keep my plants from dying.

Expert Response

Rhododendrons have a very fine, shallow root system which extends well beyond the plant itself. If you put a raised bed around them, they will not function well at all.  Just digging into the area can cause harm to them. If the soil goes up into the stem areas that could invite disease.
