pesticide concerns #876204

Asked July 07, 2024, 3:19 PM EDT

My neighbor's lawn has a sign indicated there was a pesticide treatment. They are out of town, so I will discuss when they return. I am concerned in general about this practice but especially with my organic yard and vegetable garden adjacent to their property. I appreciate your advice on this troubling situation. I have garlic, beans, peppers, tomatoes, rhubarb and several herb plants close to the property line.

I am following up to check in.  My ideas were to ask for specific chemical used, date and method of application.  Unfortunately, the west wind often blows from their side, and since I think it was sprayed, could check wind direction for date of spraying.

Hi Liz,

It is legal for people to use pesticides in their yards.  As required, it was posted. Unfortunately I don't think there is too much you can do about it other than put up a fence to stop any drift.

Certainly talk to your neighbor and explain your concerns. I have see pest control "specialists" spray during windy days. Talking with your neighbor is really the best tactic. Maybe they were just concerned about a one time insect and you "work" together . Sorry I can't be of more help, but sometimes showing another way of doing things is more powerful than getting into a debate.

Hi Liz,

You certainly could ask for that information. I'm not sure if they are legally bound to tell you. Not to sound preachy but, I would ask in the nicest way. It won't help if you antagonize them. Maybe bring over some flowers or veg to show them what you are trying to grow?
